The 5 Backroom Staff That Ruben Amorim Is Hoping To Take With Him To United

Manchester United announced on Friday afternoon that Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim will take the reins at Old Trafford.

The 39-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, with an option for an additional year, but he will only start his job on November 11th.

There were reports that Amorim’s appointment had been held up by two issues; firstly a 30-day notice period. Sporting wanted extra compensation to remove it but a compromise has been found, with the Red Devils paying an additional €1m to get him within 10 days instead.

The second problem surrounds the fate of Amorim’s backroom team. They will cost additional compensation and no details have been given as to when they could join their manager at Old Trafford. So who are the coaches in question?

The 5-man backroom team

Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido are Amorim’s two assistants. The pair have worked with him throughout his managerial career at Casa Pia, Braga and Sporting. For that reason, you would expect United to pay the required compensation to get them to Carrington.

Goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital is somebody that Amorim is also keen to have with him, having worked with the 63-year-old both at Braga and Sporting.

Emanuel Ferro (the first team coach at Sporting) and sports scientist Paulo Barreira will also be brought in if Amorim gets his way.

What is the situation with van Nistelrooy?

Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as interim boss following Erik ten Hag’s sacking on Monday. He was in the dugout for the 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

It has now been confirmed that the Dutchman will stay until Amorim joins, meaning he is set to take charge for the fixtures against Chelsea, PAOK and Leicester. Amorim’s first game will be against Ipswich Town after the international break.
