Manchester United will “resume” discussions with Thomas Tuchel if the club do sack Erik ten Hag during the international break, according to the I paper.
The former Chelsea manager was first approached in the summer but talks broke down over personal terms and how much power the German would have over decisions.
However, it appears that Tuchel will be spoken to for a second time if the United job becomes vacant over the coming days.
The 51-year-old has supporters inside the club, with the I claiming that he is regarded as a “world-leading coach” who has won trophies at every team he has managed.
Disagreements among United’s board
INEOS owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to be a big fan of former England boss Gareth Southgate and ex-Brighton head coach Graham Potter.
However, Ratcliffe won’t have the only say on who gets the job, which means the likes of Tuchel are still very much in contention if ten Hag is let go.
What is the club’s stance on their current manager?
The Manchester Evening News have reported that the Red Devils “will not protect” ten Hag from the sack if his side lose to Aston Villa this weekend.
While Harry Maguire saved United’s blushes by scoring the equaliser against Porto in the Europe League on Thursday night, the manager is still on thin ice.
Ten Hag has insisted that his team is still a work in progress and he should be judged on results at the end of the season. However, after starting his third campaign in charge very poorly, patience is short with the Dutchman.
With the international break coming up after the match at Villa Park, it is a perfect opportunity for INEOS and the board to reassess the manager’s future.
