Former Manchester United Defender Says United Striker Erik Ten Hag Didn’t Want To Sign Looks “Caught Off Guard”

Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister has said that striker Joshua Zirkzee doesn’t look comfortable in the Premier League yet.

United find themselves in a period of turbulence as things stand following the sacking of Erik Ten Hag last week as Ruud Van Nistelrooy remain the interim boss.

However, Ruben Amorim has been named as Ten Hag’s successor as the Sporting CP manager will join at Old Trafford during the next international break.

The new manager could provide a boost to Joshua Zirkzee who has struggled since joining from Bologna for a fee of £36.5m in the summer transfer window.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister doesn’t think he looks comfortable in a United shirt yet. He told Lucky Block: “Joshua Zirkzee doesn’t look like an out-and-out Premier League striker to me,” he said. “He’s got some good technical ability, but it’s very early in his Premier League career and he just needs to get used to it.

“It’s a bit like watching Rasmus Hojlund in his first season at the club last year – I think a lot of players who join from overseas are surprised by the speed of the Premier League and I think that’s caught Zirkzee off guard.

“I’ve seen him come on and play a couple of cameo roles and I think he’s done fairly well – he’s got some decent vision and nice touches, but he’s not the finished article yet and hopefully he can watch and learn in order to improve.”

Erik Ten Hag didn’t want to sign Joshua Zirkzee

The Dutch striker has scored just one goal since arriving from Bologna in the summer as he has made 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Reports have now emerged that former United boss Erik Ten Hag didn’t want to sign Joshua Zirkzee as he was not the Dutch manager’s choice of striker.

The Sun are reporting that Ineos’ management team chose to bring him in to the disagreement of Ten Hag at the time. Furthermore, the report also claims that Zirkzee arrived at Manchester United out-of-shape and that it took him a while to shift that weight that he was carrying.
