Manchester United have joined the battle to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, according to reports in England.

The 24-year-old has been interesting Manchester City, but the Citizens have now prioritised his teammate Rodri as their number one summer transfer target.

It leaves the way clear for United to make their move for Saul, but they will have to make a sizeable offer to prise him away from Atletico.

The Spanish club are reportedly prepared to hold out for the midfielder’s €150m (£128.2m) release clause after having already sold Lucas Hernandez for €80m to Bayern Munich.

With reports that both Ander Herrera and Juan Mata will be leaving Old Trafford on free transfers this summer, United will be keen to strengthen in the middle of the park.

Saul would be closer to Herrera than Mata in terms of goals and creativity. He has scored six times and contributed three assists in 38 games for Atletico this campaign.
