Amorim Dealt Double Injury Blow Ahead Of 1st Game As United Manager

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is expected to undergo further tests on a back problem ahead of Ruben Amorim’s first match in charge against Ipswich Town this weekend.

The Argentinian international picked up the knock during the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Leicester City earlier this month.

Martinez was called up by Argentina but, after being assessed by the medical staff, it was decided that the centre-back would not be fit to play in their two World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru.

He was given permission by the club to remain in South America for the entirety of the international break but he has returned to the Carrington training centre early in order to aid his recovery.

A second centre-back has been struck down by injury

Amorim could also be without Victor Lindelof for the Ipswich fixture, with the 30-year-old having sustained a groin injury in Sweden’s 2-1 win over Slovakia on Saturday night.

The defender had to be helped off the pitch after going down midway through the first half. No estimate has been given as to when he will return, with additional tests needed to ascertain the extent of the issue.

Latest Manchester United injury news

The Red Devils currently have seven players on the treatment table, including Martinez and Lindelof. A fair few of them are believed to be closing in on a return to match action.

Leny Yoro could be available soon after the international break, having spent nearly four months out with a broken metatarsal. Kobbie Mainoo (hamstring) and Harry Maguire (calf) are thought to be in the final stages of their rehab for their respective injuries.

Tyrell Malacia is working hard on his match fitness as he bids to make his comeback after 18 months sidelined with a serious knee issue. Luke Shaw has not yet made the step up to full training. The fullback has not played at all this season due to a leg injury.
