Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says he is feeling “okay”, despite picking up an injury during the 2-1 win over Scotland on Sunday night.
The Portuguese international appeared to sustain a knock before playing on but, when asked about his fitness following the match, the midfielder played down fears he had picked up a serious problem:
“It’s okay. It’s just a little bump.”
Portugal have played both of their Nations League fixtures, having won 2-1 against Croatia in their opening match last Thursday.
It means that Fernandes can now return to the UK to get some rest before United play their next match this weekend. Erik ten Hag’s side face Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday lunchtime.
Late Returns for United’s South American players
Manuel Ugarte’s Uruguay will play Venezuela on Tuesday night. The game won’t finish until just before 1 AM Wednesday morning UK Time which means the midfielder may not return to training until Friday.
Ten Hag has already questioned Ugarte’s fitness, having said that the club’s newest signing may need weeks before being fully up to speed, having not played competitively at club level since last season.
Ugarte is not the only one who could return late. Alejandro Garnacho’s Argentina also play in Colombia on Tuesday evening, although the kick-off time is slightly earlier.
Ten Hag needs his best lineup against Southampton
It’s never easy to come back straight after an international break and be firing on all cylinders instantly. After the chastening defeat to Liverpool last time out, though, the manager needs a good result.
The Saints should be there for the taking, having lost all three of their games so far this season. Anything other than a victory at St Mary’s would raise further questions about ten Hag’s position at the club.
