Manchester United Defender Posts Touching Tribute To The Munich Air Disaster On Instagram

Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire has posted a thoughtful tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy of the Munich air disaster on Instagram.

In the picture uploaded to Maguire’s Instagram, it shows him laying a wreath at ceremony to honour those who died in Munich on that fateful day. Also pictured is Katie Zelem, who plays for Manchester United Women.

On the post, Maguire captioned it with: “Honouring the heroes we lost. Manchester United will never die.”

The post currently has just under 200,000 likes on the site. Among those who liked the picture was Manchester City and England defender John Stones, who plays with Maguire at international level for the Three Lions. The post was also liked by Manchester United’s official Instagram account.

The Munich air disaster occured on February 6, 1958 at Munich Reim-Airport in what was then known as West Germany. 44 people were on the plane when it failed to take off and subsequently crashed – 23 of them were killed as a result.

Among those who died included Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne and Mark Jones, all of whom were United players. In total, eight Manchester United players were killed as a result of the crash, with two others (Johnny Berry and Jackie Blanchflower) never playing football again.

Bobby Charlton, Harry Gregg and manager Matt Busby were among those who survived the crash, following their European Cup quarter final victory over Red Star Belgrade.
