Manchester United 3 – 1 San Jose Earthquakes (Match Review)

Manchester United picked up their second victory of their pre-season tour of America after a debut goal from Memphis Depay helped secure a relatively easy 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes.

United won their first game of the USA tour with a 1-0 win over Club America as Morgan Schneiderlin scored his first goal for the club. Last nights victory was a little more resounding, and there are various players who have caught the eye.

The Red Devils started the game without any real chances, Van Gaal opted for the possession game we all saw last season and the game flowed with much quicker pace than we saw against Club America. Juan Mata opened the scoring before Memphis Depay doubled the lead just 4 minutes later as Pierazzi’s back pass to Wynne caught the defender on his heels and the speedster nipped in to slide in his goal after 37 minutes.

The MLS took advantage of United’s leaky defence and managed to pull a goal back just before half time through Fatai Alashe.

As the second half began, United made an entire team change and the ‘second half XI’ seemed to possess much less flow than that of the ‘first half XI’. Regardless, Brazil U20 international Andreas Pereira headed home his first senior goal in the 61st minute from a Jesse Lingard cross. There was some criticism from the boss, who admitted the only bright spark of the second half was Andreas Pereira.

Van Gaal said after the game: “In the second half, I think we played very badly, a lot of ball losses, unnecessary, and the only highlight was the goal from Pereira and I think we don’t give many chances away but we give possibilities away.”

The Dutchman also had some criticism for new signing Bastian Schweinsteiger, who he labelled ‘bad’.

“He was also bad. There was one highlight I think and that was Pereira.”

“Players can play bad and certainly when you have only three days or six days training sessions in your legs and you have to play 45 minutes.”

“Everybody can say that it’s easy to step in but it is not easy. I think the first match he played very well, and now he played bad. But that is also a process and certainly when you only have one week of training.”
