Porto will not sell Man Utd transfer target William Gomes this summer unless a team is willing to match his release clause, according to reports in the Brazilian media.

Globo Esporte claim that the Red Devils, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have had initial conversations with the 20-year-old’s representatives.

However, any attempts to sign Gomes will be knocked back by Porto, who see him as a key player heading into next season.

Any team keen on recruiting the Brazilian will be told to pay his €80m (£69m) buyout fee in full.

Man Utd’s interest in the forward is surprising

This is the second time Gomes has been mentioned as a potential target for Michael Carrick’s side over the past week.

Madrid-based publication AS were the first to confirm the club’s interest and Globo Esporte have now backed up their report.

However, Gomes is a left-footed right winger, which is not exactly a profile Carrick needs. It is believed that a left-winger is the priority.

Of course, there is always a possibility that Carrick intends to use Gomes on the left. Patrick Dorgu has similarly been deployed as a traditional winger rather than in an inverted role.

Who could be signed instead of Gomes?

From the looks of things, the Red Devils won’t be challenging Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain for Yan Diomande. The Ivorian’s eyewatering €130m (£112m) valuation has made the decision not to pursue him pretty easy.

Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye is back on the club’s radar, while speculation about a move for AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has started to increase. However, it is believed that the Portuguese international won’t be leaving the San Siro before the World Cup.
