Man Utd legend Paul Scholes has called on his former club to splash the cash on Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The Red Devils are believed to have been put off by the Italian’s asking price, as they were with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. However, Scholes says that if United “want to be successful” next campaign, they should go all in on Tonali:

“I’ve said it, I said it on the podcast [The Good, The Bad & The Football] six months ago, I love Tonali from Newcastle. It looks like a few clubs are in for him, including Tottenham.”

“It doesn’t sound like we are in for him, but I think that would be [a great signing]… he knows the Premier League, he’s been with Newcastle for two or three years, obviously he had a year where he couldn’t play, but I think he’s a top-class midfield player.”

“Whether Manchester United want to do that [Tonali] deal for £90m-£100m, whatever it is, I don’t know, but I think they’re going to have to do some business if they want to be successful next year.”

Tottenham have already had a bid rejected by Newcastle for the 26-year-old. Spurs’s offer (worth around £80m) was substantially below the player’s valuation, but they may cool their interest after landing Fernandes.

Manchester City are also reportedly contemplating an approach for Tonali, even after recruiting Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a club-record £116m.

Arsenal are in the mix as well, but like United, they are currently exploring moves for other targets (including Tonali’s teammate Bruno Guimaraes).

Man Utd want to sign at least one more midfielder

Despite securing the services of Atalanta’s Ederson pretty quickly, the club’s transfer business has stalled in recent weeks as attempts to bring in other signings have faltered.

With Mateus Fernandes set to join Tottenham, Director of Football Jason Wilcox has a decision to make about who to pursue next.

United are still expected to buy (at least) one midfielder between now and the end of the summer transfer window. You never know; they could yet make a bid for Tonali.
