Man Utd legend Nicky Butt says he would have backed his former club to make a move for Fulham midfielder Sander Berge.
It is believed the Norwegian international was on United’s shortlist of midfield targets before they secured the signature of Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, and Butt wonders whether Berge would have been a better choice:
“Sander Berge has been brilliant for Norway. There’s always someone at a World Cup that stands out. He’s one of the ones that has really stood out and makes you go, ‘wow, what a player he is’.”
“But some people are different players for their country; he didn’t stand out that much for me at Fulham. In the last few games, with his athleticism and his size, he’s a powerhouse, a really good player.”
“But I just don’t see Man United buying another midfielder now. They can’t unless they’ve got more money than we think.”
Man Utd could still recruit a third midfielder
The Red Devils have spent a grand total of £83m up front, with another £6m due in add-ons, on Santos and Atalanta’s Ederson.
There are now some doubts about the latter’s arrival at Old Trafford, but even if the deal is finalised, the fees shelled out on new midfielders are still well short of the reported £150m reserved to strengthen the position.
That does leave room for another addition in the middle of the park, although many would question whether Berge is the right player.

Ugarte’s injury makes another signing MORE likely
After Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury whilst playing for Uruguay at the World Cup, it was suggested that it would end any hope of a 3rd midfield addition, with funds required from his sale to finance further deals.
However, his absence means manager Michael Carrick could be left with just Kobbie Mainoo, Santos and Ederson to fill two key positions. With additional Champions League matches to play next season, there is a need for more midfield options to provide cover.
