Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is “keen” on an “emotional return” to Man Utd, according to reports.

The England international left the Red Devils on a permanent basis just over eight years ago, having been with the club since the age of 10.

TalkSPORT claim that United are now working on a deal to bring him back to Old Trafford this summer as they seek a new no.2.

The Premier League’s ‘homegrown’ quota is believed to be one of the main motivations for re-signing Johnstone, but the fact that he knows the club well, and he has enough experience to back up Senne Lammens, makes him a good fit for the role.

Man Utd have looked at other options

Johnstone is by no means the only goalkeeper who has been under consideration to be Lammens’ deputy. A couple of free agents have also been on the club’s radar.

Angus Gunn, who was released by Nottingham Forest at the end of last month, has been looked at. He was Scotland’s number one at the World Cup.

Karl Darlow is another potential option, having left Leeds, and in addition to being homegrown, the two keepers would not require a transfer fee, unlike Johnstone.

Several goalkeepers could leave Old Trafford

The search for a new no.2 has been stepped up due to the expectation that Altay Bayindir will return to Turkey this summer.

He will follow Andre Onana, who has agreed a new season-long loan to Trabzonspor. The Turkish Super Lig side won’t pay all of the Cameroon international’s wages, but they are expected to pick up the majority of his pay packet.

Radek Vitek, meanwhile, is likely to be sold following a successful loan spell at Championship side Bristol City. Rangers have been linked with the Czech youth international over the past week.
