Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has labelled Manchester United wingback Patrick Dorgu as one of five players who are “not good enough” to play for the club.
Speaking after the 0-0 draw against rivals Manchester City at the weekend, Neville said that the Red Devils need an overhaul in both the wingback positions and up front:
“They need five new players straight away before you even think about the rest of it. The three up front are not good enough and the two wing-backs, they’re not good enough.
“They need five players. They need to serve him with five players who are good enough in this system to be able to play his system the way he wants.”
Dorgu has only just arrived at Old Trafford
The Denmark international was signed from Lecce for an initial £25m back in January but he has struggled to get to grips with the Premier League.
At 20 years of age, though, some may argue it is very harsh to judge Dorgu at such an early stage. He needs time and patience to mature.
Neville has exacting standards that United are failing to meet
When the former United captain says that Dorgu is “not good enough”, he is referring to the standards that both he and his teammates set when they were winning trophy after trophy during the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
The desire to get back to the top of English football is undoubtedly influencing Neville’s thinking on Dorgu and other current United players.
INEOS have, though, decided to take a different route in the transfer market – they are not going to be making signings who are ready to win titles from the get-go. They are investing in youth – players like Dorgu, where it may take some time before we see the very best of them.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that the young Dane was attracting interest from the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool before his move at the start of this year so he does possess a lot of talent. The question is, will people give him the time he needs to realise that potential at United?
