Ipswich striker Liam Delap has “moved ahead” of Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres on Manchester United’s list of summer transfer targets, according to reports.
ESPN claim there are a number of factors that have influenced the Red Devils’ decision to prioritise a bid for the England Under-21 international.
Financially, the transfer will be a lot cheaper. It is believed that if Ipswich are relegated, Delap can be signed for £40m due to a clause in his contract. Gyokeres, meanwhile, could cost between £60m and £85m.
Secondly, Ruben Amorim’s side feel there is a greater chance of signing Delap, with Gyokeres now reportedly a top target for Arsenal, who can offer the Swedish international Champions League football next season.
Delap does have other suitors
Manchester City have a buyback clause on the player they sold to Ipswich for £20m last year but it is said to be unlikely that they will try to bring him back to the Etihad. Liverpool have also been mentioned as a potential suitor.
However, ESPN report that the biggest threat to United’s plans is Chelsea. The Blues have been keeping tabs on Delap for several months, and their manager Enzo Maresca has worked with him before.
The Man United target has been praised by his teammates
Speaking about Delap after he scored in the 1-1 draw against Aston Villa back in February, Tractor Boys goalkeeper Alex Palmer labelled him a “monster”.
Since then, the 22-year-old has continued to find the back of the net, having bagged his 12th of the season during the 2-1 defeat to Wolves at the weekend.
Some fans may question whether Delap has the experience to lead the line for United, especially after just one season in the Premier League, but finances are playing a big part in who they are targeting.
