Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has given a detailed rundown on the current state of affairs regarding Man Utd’s interest in Newcastle’s Lewis Hall.
Downie has extremely strong insider knowledge on the Magpies, with the Daily Mail‘s Craig Hope the only other source who can match the reliability of his information on the North East club.
Speaking on his YouTube channel about Hall, Downie said that the former Chelsea player has made it clear he isn’t 100% happy at St James’ Park, and it has given Man United encouragement that a deal is possible:
“I did hear some murmurings about this last week from someone who would know the situation, someone close to the situation. And then one of my [Sky Sports] colleagues got a story regarding Lewis Hall.”
“I asked them to hold it until today [July 31st] just with everything else that was going on regarding Eddie Howe and [Matthias] Jaissle coming in. I just thought it was just an avalanche of information, but the sort of truth to it is that Manchester United do want to sign Lewis Hall. They’re considering putting something together to try and sign him. They think it’ll be difficult to do, and it will be difficult to do.”
“Newcastle absolutely don’t want to sell him. And you know he’s probably worth £60m, something like that, maybe more. It’s a lot of money. Will Manchester United be able to do the deal? I don’t know. I really don’t know. But they like him.”
“They’re short at left back. They’re exploring the possibility of doing a deal. So, it’s in its early stages, but it’s probably a link that’s not going to go away and probably the last thing Newcastle wanted. The one thing I will say to that is Hall wasn’t so happy towards the end [of last season]. There’s a couple of incidents where he was taken off; he wasn’t too happy about it – subbed at halftime.”
“Perhaps maybe a new challenge, a change of scenery, a new manager and stuff might just give him a little bit of a sort of hunger to start the season and see where he goes. I wouldn’t say I certainly think the Bruno Guimaraes one [to Arsenal] is a lot more likely to happen than the Lewis Hall one, but that interest is there from Manchester United.”

Man Utd have got a real chance to sign the defender
Based on Downie’s information, a lot now hinges on whether the Red Devils are ready to table a bid of £60m or more for Hall.
We have already seen this summer that Director of Football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada have had issues getting deals over the line, but they will need to be swift and decisive if they want to get the England international in through the door.
Talks between Jaissle and Hall could still be crucial
One note of caution is that the left-back’s unhappiness was based on the actions of the club’s previous manager, Eddie Howe.
The appointment of Matthias Jaissle does give the Magpies a chance to start afresh, and they may use the German in their attempts to persuade Hall to stay and sign a new contract. For now, though, a move to the Red Devils does look to be on the cards.
