Man Utd have reignited their interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Julian Ryerson, according to reports in the German media.

The Norwegian international was originally linked with a move to Old Trafford back in March, but tabloid Bild claim that the Red Devils have “renewed contact” with the fullback’s entourage.

Ryerson had a standout season for Dortmund, racking up an impressive 18 assists in all competitions for the Bundesliga side.

However, the 28-year-old did play almost exclusively as a wingback, which does explain his activity in the final third of the pitch.

Dortmund are open to selling Ryerson

Ryerson will turn 29 in November, and he has less than two years left on his contract at Signal Iduna Park. For that reason, he is on the market, despite his excellent form.

Bild report that an offer of around €30m (£26m) for Ryerson may be too good to turn down. That figure is unlikely to put off United if they do see him as a good option to strengthen the back four.

Why are Man Utd pursuing a right-back?

Some fans may be asking why someone like Ryerson is needed when manager Michael Carrick already has two options for the right-hand side of defence in Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui.

Really, he needs more competition for Luke Shaw on the opposite flank but, Director of Football Jason Wilcox may be seeking creative solutions to add depth.

If Newcastle’s Lewis Hall is not available this summer, he may decide to pursue Ryerson in order for Mazraoui to provide cover for Shaw instead.

That certainly would not be an optimal choice, considering the Moroccan is naturally right-footed, but he hasn’t looked out of place on the left when asked to play there for the Red Devils and his country.
