Man Utd are “exploring several” potential targets to replace Joshua Zirkzee, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutchman could potentially return to Serie A before the transfer window closes, two years after his arrival from Bologna, and speaking on the Market Madness podcast, Romano said:

“I think if Zirkzee goes to Italy with Fiorentina in talks and more clubs interested, in that case, Man United could add one more striker.”

“Because, obviously, there is Champions League football this season, and they need one more striker apart from Benjamin Sesko, (Matheus) Cunha, or (Marcus) Rashford, who can play there. So United are exploring several possibilities.”

Which strikers are Man Utd looking at?

Several players have been mentioned over the past couple of weeks. The club have been linked with Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic, Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta and Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney.

They have reportedly been offered Atletico Madrid’s Alexander Sorloth and Juventus’s Jonathan David too, although there is no confirmation that the Manchester club are actively pursuing the pair.

What is the latest on Zirkzee’s exit?

The Netherlands international’s move to Fiorentina has not been finalised. The Viola have offered a €5m (£4.3m) loan fee and they are prepared to cover the player’s wages in full.

Juventus are also said to be keen on Zirkzee, but they would only enter the race for the forward if they are able to offload David first.

It is a situation to keep a very close eye on, both in terms of whether United will agree to Zirkzee’s exit, and who they could replace him with.
