Manchester United are tempted to “hijack” Newcastle’s move to sign James Trafford from Burnley, according to reports.
The Magpies tried and failed to buy the former Manchester City keeper last summer, but they are expected to reignite their pursuit over the coming months.
They may now have to contend with the Red Devils for Trafford’s signature, with GiveMeSport claiming that the 22-year-old is being looked at as a potential candidate to be the club’s new No.1.
Head coach Ruben Amorim is not convinced by Andre Onana, whose position this season has been called into question after several high-profile mistakes.
United could have the upper hand
While Newcastle’s long-term interest in Trafford and the prospect of European football next season could tempt the keeper into making the switch to St James’ Park, they won’t give him guarantees on first-team football.
Eddie Howe’s side also have Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka on their books, so competition for the No.1 spot will be fierce. Man United, however, could be prepared to hand Trafford the gloves ahead of Onana from the outset.
Burnley have set their price
It is believed that the Clarets will sanction Trafford’s sale this summer if a club meets their £30m valuation. Head coach Scott Parker will be reluctant to lose the keeper, who he praised earlier this month:
“James has been incredible all season, not just this month. Since I arrived at this football team, he has been a top professional and a rock for the team.”
Trafford has conceded just 9 goals in 33 Championship appearances so far this campaign, keeping an impressive 24 clean sheets in the process.
Many regard him as a future England number one, so it is not a surprise that United and other teams are so keen on securing his services.
