Manchester United are interested in signing Juventus winger Federico Chiesa, according to the Corriere Dello Sport.

The Italian publication names the Red Devils as one of three Premier League clubs (alongside Liverpool and Newcastle) who have targeted the Italian international.

Chiesa returned from a serious knee injury at the start of last season and, while his form improved as the campaign went on, he has struggled to win over manager Max Allegri.

That difficult relationship with the coach has led to Juve making the 25-year-old available for transfer, with the Corriere Dello Sport claiming that he “can leave” if a team bids €50m (£43m).

Chiesa has been praised for his abilities

It is somewhat surprising to hear that Chiesa has been put on the market, considering he is a player with undoubted natural talent. A few years back, 1982 World Cup winner Bruno Conti spoke glowingly about him:

“He has all the quality to do well because he is a genuine talent. He can play on either flank depending on whether the coach asks him to get to the byline and cross or pull back inside and try for a shot. In order to do that, you need your basic technique to be flawless.”

Signing a winger is not a priority for United

The fact that Chiesa is available for just over £40m does make him a tempting target but you can’t see him moving to Old Trafford this summer for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the Red Devils are working within a strict transfer budget and, if they follow up the signings of Mason Mount and Andre Onana by recruiting Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund, they may end up spending £160m, which is way above the £100m to £120m they had allocated for purchases.

On top of that, manager Erik ten Hag has no less than seven wingers already at his disposal in Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Facundo Pellestri, Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga. While a couple of those could leave, there still really isn’t any room for someone like Chiesa.
