Gary Neville says Michael Carrick has not formally asked to have his name included on the list to become Man Utd’s next permanent manager.
After four consecutive wins, some fans will be hoping that the 44-year-old stays in the job, but Neville claims Carrick will have to throw his hat in the ring first to be considered for the position:
“I asked the club ‘what is the official position of the football club in terms of what you’re saying publicly to everybody else?’ They said ‘we’ve actually begun our process now of starting to look for another manager’.”
“What they’ve said is they’re not going to be bounced into, irrespective of wins or draws or losses on the pitch in this next couple of months, making an appointment. They’re going to wait towards the end of the season… if Michael Carrick says ‘I want to put my name in the hat’, Carrick would go into a process.”
Man Utd have made rash decisions in the past
Many will be mindful of the fact that the club have given the keys to an interim head coach before. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed on the back of the team performing well in the second half of the 2018/19 season.
Erik ten Hag was also handed a new contract after winning the FA Cup final before being sacked just a few months later. Based on Neville’s comments, it seems the club is mindful of past mistakes.
Who is the favourite to become the next Man Utd boss?
Unsurprisingly, Carrick is the bookies’ favourite at the moment, with every betting firm pricing him at odds-on.
There are much longer odds for the likes of Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner (between 5/1 and 8/1), England coach Thomas Tuchel (between 10/1 and 12/1) and ex-Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate (between 6/1 and 16/1).
