Steve Holland
The most surprising of those to be hired to support Carrick is Gareth Southgate’s former England assistant coach.
After a brief playing career, Holland started out life coaching in Crewe’s academy before becoming their first-team manager. He subsequently left to coach in Stoke’s youth setup prior to making a key move to Chelsea in 2011.
Holland managed the reserves initially before becoming assistant to five different managers – Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafa Benitez, Guus Hiddink and Antonio Conte.
During his time with Chelsea, Holland had already taken up a part-time position as Southgate’s assistant as England Under-21 head coach, and when Southgate became manager of the senior team in 2016, he left Chelsea shortly afterwards. When Southgate resigned in 2024, he took up only his second management position at J League side Yokohama F-Marinos, but he lasted less than six months, being sacked back in April.
