Alan Smith Names 4 Managers Who He Believes Will Be In The Running For The Man Utd Job This Summer

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith has listed 4 managers who could be in the frame to take the vacant Man Utd job on a permanent basis.

Asked by Best Betting Sites UK who he thinks should be a candidate to succeed Ruben Amorim in the dugout at Old Trafford, Smith replied:

“Fascinating, they have made a few mistakes along the way, haven’t they? You need somebody with stature and preferably a track record. So you’re looking at some of those big characters. In the summer, international managers sometimes drop away from those country jobs. Who knows what Thomas Tuchel will do? If the Man United job is an offer, we’ll see. But people like that.”

“But more domestically, Glasner at Palace. Is he going to stay at Selhurst Park? Iraola, I think, will be leaving Bournemouth. He’s the type of coach I think could play the Manchester United way. And he’s destined for bigger things, with all due respect to Bournemouth. So, a big, big one. Eddie Howe said he’s at Newcastle, but who knows? So, we’ll watch this space.”

Are the 4 managers Smith mentions genuine contenders?

England boss Thomas Tuchel has been backed as a candidate by club legend Paul Scholes, but there is plenty of uncertainty over whether the German will leave his current position after the World Cup.

Oliver Glasner is undoubtedly a contender, with reports suggesting that the Austrian has admirers on United’s board. Andoni Iraola is a rank outsider, while the fact that Eddie Howe has already committed his future to Newcastle would suggest he is not in the frame, unless he is sacked.

Why Man Utd may wait until after the World Cup

Some fans may be asking why the club are looking to hire an interim manager rather than making a permanent appointment now, but Smith does make an important point about international coaches.

In addition to Tuchel, Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann and Brazil’s Carlo Ancelotti could also leave their current positions following the World Cup. It is believed that France’s Didier Deschamps may be available after the tournament in North America as well.

With that being the case, CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox are probably correct to keep their powder dry and wait to appoint a long-term manager
