Man Utd defender Lisandro Martinez is “taking part in full training” with the first-team again, the club have confirmed.
The Argentinian international has been on the treatment table for two months, having last played against West Ham in early February.
It was initially reported that Martinez had picked up a minor calf strain, which would not keep him out for long.
However, the 28-year-old ended up missing five fixtures – Everton, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Bournemouth.
It looks like Martinez will be available for the next league game against Leeds on Monday night. The squad are currently in Dublin for a training camp.
Martinez’s injury problems over the past 3 seasons
To say that the centre-back is injury-prone would be an understatement. Since picking up a metatarsal injury at the back end of the 2022/23 season, he has spent 662 days on the sidelines.
For club and country, Martinez has been unavailable for 96 matches in total during that time. It is not a great record, and this latest setback once again emphasises that he cannot be relied upon.
His contract expires at the end of next season, although the Red Devils do have an option for an extra twelve months. While the club will probably trigger that clause, it seems unlikely that he will remain at Old Trafford beyond 2028 unless his fitness seriously improves.
Another centre-half has committed his future to Man Utd
While the club have confirmed Martinez is back in contention, they have also announced today that Harry Maguire will stay in Manchester for at least another season.
The 33-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year extension. The news was expected, and it is now anticipated that Kobbie Mainoo will follow suit and sign a new deal of his own over the coming days/weeks.
