Amorim Hints At Shock Early Comeback For Injured Man Utd Star

Man Utd head coach Ruben Amorim says that captain Bruno Fernandes is already targeting a return to full training.

The Portuguese international picked up a hamstring injury during the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on December 21st, and he was expected to be out for a month.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before the Wolves game, Amorim said that while he would not play on Tuesday night, Fernandes is pushing to make his comeback earlier than predicted:

“Bruno was already saying that he needs to train, but we don’t know. No chance he is going to play against Wolves, no chance.”

When was Fernandes scheduled to return?

The Manchester derby on January 17th has been pencilled in for the midfielder’s comeback, but Amorim’s remarks do suggest that he could play earlier than that.

After Wolves, the Red Devils face Leeds on Sunday, before matches against Burnley at Turf Moor and Brighton in the FA Cup third round at home.

The latest Man Utd injury news

Amorim has revealed that Matthijs de Ligt is still “struggling” with a back injury that has kept him sidelined since the win over Crystal Palace.

Harry Maguire has been out for even longer with a hamstring problem, and he is still not ready to make his return to the first team either.

Kobbie Mainoo has a calf injury that forced him to miss the last 2 matches, but unlike de Ligt and Maguire, he is now back out on the grass doing individual training drills, which indicates he isn’t far from returning. Mason Mount, meanwhile, has been ruled out for the Wolves fixture after being forced off at halftime against Newcastle. You can read a more comprehensive summary in our injury report.
