Man United’s attacking stars can drive Mourinho’s men to the title

Manchester United continued their thrilling start to the new Premier League campaign with another 4-0 drubbing, ensuring they’ve now beaten West Ham and Swansea City by the monstrous scoreline in the opening weeks of the season.

The Red Devils have enjoyed a storming run of form to start the new season, with their defence yet to concede in the league, but the fact of the matter is the jury remains on the back-line as they’re yet to be truly tested.

Manchester United’s next three games against Leicester City, Stoke City and Everton could give us a deeper insight into Jose Mourinho’s defence but the fact of the matter is the Portuguese boss has solved his side’s woes in attack.

Last year, the Red Devils were wasteful in attack and dropped points in games where they shouldn’t have, like the opening two fixtures this season, but Manchester United’s massive improvements in attack have left Mourinho’s side as leading contenders for the title.

That’s admittedly a bold claim to make when we’re just two games into the new season but Manchester United boast a pedigree in attack that’s extremely difficult to counter, as the depth provided by Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and other attacking stars is second to none.

Lukaku has started the season in blistering form, scoring four goals in his first three appearances for the Red Devils, and Pogba has also looked to be more like the man that stole headlines with Juventus and commanded a then world-record £89m fee last summer.

Martial also has a point to prove following links with an exit this summer and signings that could be seen as replacements coming in and that seems to have driven the 21-year-old Frenchman forward, as he made a strong impression off the bench yesterday.

Rashford has also looked too hot to handle, and there’s still a lot more to come from the young Englishman this season and in the years to come. If the Red Devils get all their star assets firing on all cylinders then they’ll look to be unstoppable.

Manchester United do still have to prove their worth as the season progresses though and not just against the stronger sides in the division, as they’ll have to balance involvement in the Champions League with their league campaign after the early-season international break.

How they’ll cope largely depends on the Champions League draw, which will be made in the coming weeks, but Manchester United were fortunate last year to be handed a relatively comfortable draw throughout their Europa League campaign- which meant that Mourinho could select a weaker side where necessary, something he may not be able to do this term.

Whichever way you look at it two 4-0 wins on the bounce must have made Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City and Everton take notice as the morale and spirit in the United squad seems very solid and so far has led to very assured and confident performances. You need to score goals to win the league and now it would seem Man United have more resources than last year but their defensive performances cannot be underestimated with two clean sheets either.
