Man United trio named on short-list for Europa League Player of the Year

Manchester United are gearing up for the new Premier League season, where the Red Devils kick-off their campaign at Old Trafford next weekend against a new-look West Ham outfit, but there’s still further opportunities to bask in the glories of last season.

Jose Mourinho’s side can look forward to featuring in the Champions League next season after their Europa League victory in May, defeating Ajax in the final, and three Manchester United players have been named on UEFA’s short-list for the Europa League Player of the Year.

Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are the three Manchester United players to make the list, which caps-off a brilliant achievement for Mourinho’s transfer business as all three players were high-profile additions last summer.

Mkhitaryan scored six goals in the competition, including in the final, whilst Ibrahimovic netted five goals in Manchester United’s run to the finale in Stockholm but missed the clash with the Eredivisie side through injury, which led to a premature end of his short-stint with Manchester United.

Pogba also scored in the final, helping to pay back the monstrous £89m Manchester United paid for the Frenchman’s services last summer, and both he and Mkhitaryan are looking forward to featuring in the Champions League this season.

Armenian ace Mkhitaryan, who signed from Borussia Dortmund last summer, spoke to the fans in a Q&A session on social media earlier this summer where he revealed lifting the Europa League trophy in Stockholm was the highlight of his debut season with the Premier League giants.

“Definitely lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy in Stockholm. We worked so hard to win this competition and it was truly special to be able to do it. Now we are really looking forward to be back in the UEFA Champions League.”

Manchester United’s squad, fresh from the additions of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof this summer, will now be looking to kick-on in the Champions League this season and await the group-stage draw later this month.

The Europa League Player of the Year will be announced in Monaco on August 25th, where the draw for the group stages of this year’s competition will be made.
