Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries has a €25m (£21.5m) release clause, which expires on July 15th and Manchester United would be wise to trigger it.
The Netherlands international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford on and off over the past few years and this summer is the right time to bring him in.
Dumfries played a starring role in helping Inter reach the Champions League final but the Nerazzurri’s squad is breaking up following Simone Inzaghi’s departure.
The 29-year-old is likely to be keen on a new challenge and head coach Ruben Amorim is crying out for someone like him, so it looks like a perfect fit for both parties.
Man United don’t have any natural wingbacks on the right
Both Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui struggled to really impose themselves as attack-minded wingbacks last season.
Dalot scored 3 goals and provided 1 assist in the 17 starts he made on the right-hand side, while Mazraoui’s record was even worse, managing 0 goal involvements.
Amad Diallo certainly performed better when asked to play in the position, but he is not a natural wingback and many feel he is more suited to the front three.
Dumfries’ availability is a rare opportunity
It should be pointed out that the Red Devils are not blessed with a lot of cash. They have been forced into prioritising the areas which are in most need of reinforcements, specifically up front.
In other summers, you would think that the club would have fought harder to bring in Jeremie Frimpong, who had been scouted for several years and would have been ideally suited for Amorim’s system. Yet the Dutchman ended up at Liverpool.
Even so, the availability of his fellow countryman, Dumfries, for a lower fee presents United with a great opportunity to strengthen a key position. Having scored 11 goals and provided 6 assists for Inter last campaign, he would contribute hugely in the final third of the pitch for United.
