Manchester United are seriously exploring a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, according to Sky Sports News.
Writing on his X account, one of the news channel’s reporters, Paul Gilmour, stated that the German international is being “actively considered” as a target ahead of the summer transfer window.
Tah is out of contract at the end of the season and he will be available on a free transfer, and that has attracted the interest of the Red Devils, as well as several other teams.
Gilmour claims Real Madrid could become contenders for the 29-year-old’s signature if Xabi Alonso is appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement, while Barcelona have also looked at the possibility of snapping him up.
Liverpool’s manager is a big fan of Tah
Speaking after the Reds‘ Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen in November, head coach Arne Slot praised the centre-half, despite the Merseysiders inflicting a 4-0 defeat on his team:
“I think Tah, who is a real good defender and is one of the best defenders in Germany… maybe the best defender in Germany, maybe likes to play more against a target man, someone who’s there in the middle.”
Man United need cheap replacements for Lindelof and Evans
Victor Lindelof is set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of June. Jonny Evans is also unlikely to be handed a new deal, having spent most of this season out injured.
It means that Ruben Amorim could be left with very few experienced centre-backs, which is a big issue when you are trying to field a back three.
For that reason, recruiting Tah would make a lot of sense. He could be brought in to shore up the backline without having an impact on the club’s transfer budget.
