Journalist Reveals Man United Had “Scout” In The Stands Last Weekend To Watch Onana Replacement In Action

Manchester United had a “scout” watching Botafogo’s John Victor against Palmeiras, according to UOL Esporte columnist Andre Hernan.

The two Brazilian teams faced off in the Club World Cup last 16 tie last Saturday, with Palmeiras winning the match 1-0 after extra time.

John has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford and Hernan claims the recent scouting activity suggests that the Red Devils could step up their interest in the shot-stopper.

It is believed that Botafogo won’t hold out for a high fee, with reports indicating that he could be let go for just £6m.

Man United need more competition for Onana

At the moment, it doesn’t look like Andre Onana will be leaving the Red Devils. Even if he does, a loan exit is said to be more likely than a permanent departure.

It means replacing Onana without the proceeds from his sale will be difficult. Recruiting John could be an option that Director of Football Jason Wilcox ends up choosing due to his low price tag.

The Brazilian wouldn’t necessarily demand to start every week but he could provide stern competition for Onana, if the Cameroon international does stay.

Are there any alternatives to John?

Porto’s Diogo Costa is thought to be Ruben Amorim’s preferred choice but the cost of signing the Portuguese international would be prohibitive.

He has a €75m (£64m) release clause in his contract, and while Porto may consider letting him go for a fee below that amount, the funds are simply not there to pursue him at the moment.

Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez would be the main alternative. The 32-year-old has effectively offered himself to the club, but his asking price is also pretty high, with Villa set to demand between £30m and £40m.
