Diego Leon is “set to travel to England” as he links up with Man United for the first time following his move from Cerro Porteno, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils agreed to sign the Paraguayan Under-20 international during the January transfer window for an initial £3.3m. The fee could rise to £7m depending on appearances.
Leon will officially join the Manchester club on Tuesday, 1st July. His contract runs until the summer of 2030.
After Matheus Cunha, the teenager will effectively be United’s second signing of the summer, with the club yet to agree a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo.
What do fans need to know about Leon?
The defender is still only 18 years of age but he is a left-back/wingback by trade, so he does suit Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
It’s likely that Leon will be assessed by the head coach in pre-season before a decision is made on whether he should be sent out on loan.
With the likes of Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw and the returning Tyrell Malacia available to Amorim, there isn’t exactly a lot of room in the squad.
What is the latest on Man United’s pursuit of Mbeumo?
The Red Devils had a second bid worth £55m, plus £7.5m in add-ons, rejected by Brentford last week, but there is still confidence that a deal can be finalised.
Mbeumo has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford, and his determination to make the switch is likely to play a crucial role in getting this transfer over the line.
It’s likely that Amorim’s team will have to offer more up front or, at the very least, make the add-ons included more achievable.
In other news, Man United have been tipped to battle Everton for the signature of a Leicester player who could be signed for just £9m
