Manchester United have confirmed the arrival of left-wingback Diego Leon from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno.
An agreement was reached to sign the teenager during the January transfer window, but the move was delayed until the summer, with the player allowed to finish the season in South America.
Leon will cost an initial $4m (£2.9m) with another $5m (£3.6m) due based on appearances and performance-related bonuses.
It is expected that the 18-year-old will spend the start of next season with the Under-21s as he gets acclimatised to European football.
However, if Leon is good enough, head coach Ruben Amorim has already shown that he is prepared to give young players a chance in the senior setup.
What do Man United fans need to know about Leon?
The teenager has been described as “one of the great promises of Paraguayan football”. He was being scouted by several English teams even before he made his first professional appearance.
When Leon did make his first-team debut in August last year, it was a memorable one, as he scored the winner during a 1–0 win against Sportivo Ameliano.
Since then, the defender has gone on to make 33 appearances for Cerro Porteno in all competitions.
Leon is the second signing that the Red Devils have made this summer, following the £62.5m arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves last month.
Amorim’s side are also hoping to secure the services of Bryan Mbeumo, although there is still some work to do on this deal. It was hoped that the Cameroon international would be at Carrington for pre-season, but a transfer fee has still not been agreed, with Brentford said to be holding out for their £63m asking price.
In other news, Man United could make an approach to sign a Viktor Gyokeres alternative who may only cost £38m (€45m)
