Manchester United are hoping that their “final offer” for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo will be enough to secure the forward’s signature, according to reports.
GiveMeSport claim that the Red Devils had set a “deadline” for today (Friday, 4th July) to get a deal over the line for the Cameroon international.
They were keen on having Mbeumo at the Carrington training centre for the first day of pre-season on Monday.
However, it appears that the deadline will now be missed unless the club manage to accelerate talks over the coming days.
What is the current state of play in negotiations for Mbeumo?
United’s second bid was reportedly worth £55m up front, with another £7.5m in performance-related bonuses. Technically, it satisfied Brentford’s demands to match the amount they paid for Matheus Cunha, but the inclusion of add-ons led to the proposal being rejected.
The Bees are keen to receive a higher guaranteed fee, and the next proposal will need to ensure that the bonuses are easily attainable.
Are Man United looking to sign any other players?
In addition to Mbeumo, Ruben Amorim’s side are hoping to bring in an out-and-out No.9. Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins has emerged as an option, with enquiries having been made about his availability.
It is believed that the England international would cost around £60m, but if they do sign Mbeumo, funds would have to be raised through player sales to bring in another forward.
Getting the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony off the club’s books is absolutely crucial.
At the moment, the only one of the four who looks close to leaving is Sancho. Juventus are determined to secure the 25-year-old’s services but they have tried to offer three of their players in exchange.
