Manchester United are keen to have a deal wrapped up for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo by the beginning of preseason, according to talkSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs.

Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel, Jacobs said that the Red Devils are hopeful of having the Cameroon international at Carrington when Ruben Amorim holds his first training session on July 7th:

“They want him to be there for when preseason starts, which means that this should be a big week in terms of clarity… I don’t think we’re going to have any messing around here in the sense that [Director of Football] Jason Wilcox’s mantra is to ‘get these deals done quick’.”

A second bid worth in excess of £60m (including add-ons) has been lodged for Mbeumo. The first, worth £55m, was rejected by Brentford earlier this month.

Tottenham are not in the picture

There has been some concern that Spurs could hijack United’s move for Mbeumo. Thomas Frank has been an influential figure in the player’s career but it appears his heart is set on a switch to Old Trafford.

The forward is believed to have agreed personal terms with the Red Devils, and he is now waiting on the club to agree a transfer fee.

Why do Man United want Mbeumo?

The main priority for Wilcox and Amorim has been to add goals to the attack. Mbeumo scored 20 times in the league last season so he will bring the necessary firepower, along with Matheus Cunha.

Many assume that he will be deployed on the right wing, although there have been suggestions that Amorim will consider playing him as a No.9 too, considering his goal record.

At the time of writing, Brentford have not accepted United’s offer but it does look like we are reaching the conclusion of this story one way or another.
