Man United Told They Should Appoint Ex-PL Manager As 2 Club Legends Agree

Man United have been told they should appoint former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi to replace Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils sacked Amorim on Monday morning after his explosive press conference following a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road. Man United are now tasked with finding Amorim’s successor, as Darren Fletcher is in interim charge of the club until they find a replacement.

Several world-class managers have been linked with a move to United, with the current favourite being Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner. Others include ex-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, former England manager Gareth Southgate, and ex-Barcelona manager Xavi.

It isn’t yet clear whether United have a preference or not, but several fans and former players have been speaking out about who they want to replace Amorim at Old Trafford.

Stam and Ferdinand tell Man United to appoint De Zerbi

One of the names who has been tenuously mentioned as a potential replacement for Amorim is former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who is currently at Ligue 1 side Marseille.

Ex-Man United centre-back Jaap Stam believes he would be the best man to take charge at Man United, as he would play attacking football, which suits Man United’s club philosophy.

Stam speaking to the Covers.com World Cup betting team, said: “Manchester United need a manager who wants to play attacking football, and Roberto De Zerbi would be my choice to fit that style.

“I really like De Zerbi as a manager and how he conducts himself in terms of managing the dressing room, his tactics and philosophy. He’s very clear in his approach and he’s tactically very strong; I’d like to see him given the chance at Old Trafford.”

De Zerbi was in charge at Brighton for two years, taking charge of 89 games on the South Coast. He managed to lead them to sixth place in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, qualifying for Europe for the first time in the team’s history.

Rio Ferdinand also recommends De Zerbi

Stam isn’t the only Man United legend who has said he wants De Zerbi to take charge of the club, as former United captain Rio Ferdinand also believes the Marseille manager would be an excellent appointment at Old Trafford.

He took to social media to provide a list of three managers he would pick to take over at United, and De Zerbi was one of three.

The other two that Ferdinand suggested were ex-Barcelona coach Xavi, and current England manager Thomas Tuchel, who’s contract with England is due to expire after the World Cup in the summer.
