Man United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made his debut against Sunderland over the weekend.
Ruben Amorim will be delighted that he has been able to take some of the pressure off his shoulders as his Man United side were able to win 2-0 against Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
It leaves United 10th heading into the international break, and moving forward with a lot of optimism at the fact that their form may be turning. It was an important game for Amorim and United, and one aspect of it was particularly pleasing.
Senne Lammens made his first start for the club in goal since signing in the summer transfer window from Belgian side Royal Antwerp. He started in place of Altay Bayindir, and looked like by far the best goalkeeper since David De Gea.
Man United fans were chanting “are you Schmeichel in disguise” during the game at Old Trafford, and it was no surprise, as Lammens performed excellently, making three saves, including two close efforts in the box. Whoscored.com gave him a match rating of 7.36, which is the best rating of any Man United player so far this season.
It seems that maybe Man United have managed to find their long-term solution in goal, and with Lammens being just 23, he can only get better and better, which is exciting times for Amorim and the Old Trafford faithful.
Rooney hails impressive Lammens performance
After his excellent performance against Sunderland, Lammens has received a lot of praise, including big praise from former Man United striker Wayne Rooney.
Rooney said on Match of the Day: “It was a big decision [to play him] and I think it’s difficult to be the goalkeeper for Manchester United, but I think he did really well for the majority of the game. I thought it was a good solid debut for him.
“We all hope he can be the next Peter Schmeichel.”
