Man United manager Ruben Amorim has been sacked after his explosive comments during his post-match press conference.
The Red Devils drew 1-1 against Leeds United on Sunday afternoon, after Matheus Cunha was able to secure a draw, scoring just three minutes after Leeds United opened the scoring.
It is understood that the club informed Amorim that he was being relieved of his duties on Monday morning after his press conference yesterday. It brings his 14-month spell in charge at Old Trafford to an end.
Amorim hit back at Man United hierarchy after Leeds draw
Amorim said after the Leeds United game that he is the ‘manager’ not the head coach, clearly having a dig at the Man United hierarchy. He said to BBC Sport: “I just want to say I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach.
“In every department – the scouting department, the sporting director – [they] need to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.
“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that. That is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job. Not to be a coach.”
Who will take over from Amorim?
Following the announcement, rumours and speculation will now emerge as to who the next Man United manager will be amid Amorim’s sacking.
In terms of the immediate future, former midfielder and current U18s coach Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge on an interim basis. His first game in charge would be United’s next match against Burnley on Wednesday night.
Following that, Man United have games against Brighton in the FA Cup, and then a crucial Manchester derby on January 17.
