Man United legend Rio Ferdinand claims that his former team’s global fanbase makes them the “biggest club” in English football.
Liverpool have now drawn level with the Red Devils in terms of top-flight league titles but Ferdinand insists that their Merseyside rivals still have some way to catch up the Manchester giants in one key respect:
“They’re [Liverpool] the most successful club in the land, but they’re not the biggest club. It’s a fact. You go anywhere in the world, there are more Man United fans than there are Liverpool fans. But that will change if they remain successful and Man United don’t. There will be a swing of new fans who adopt successful teams.”
“If Liverpool become that over the next 10 years then they have a chance to balance that up, in terms of the biggest club in the world right now. But right now it’s a landslide win for Man United in terms of being the biggest in the world.”
How do Man United and Liverpool compare in terms of major honours?
The Red Devils’ trophy haul totals 70. They have won 20 top division titles, 2 second division titles, 3 European Cups, 13 FA Cups, 6 League Cups, 21 Community Shields, 1 Europa League, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 FIFA Club World Cup and 1 Intercontinental Cup.
Liverpool’s honour list includes 20 top division titles, 4 second division titles, 6 European Cups, 8 FA Cups, 10 League Cups, 1 Football League Super Cup, 16 Community Shields, 3 UEFA Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.
United can still add to their list of trophies this season
The Europa League is very much up for grabs, with Ruben Amorim’s side having secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
Next up, they face Athletic Bilbao, with the first game being held in Spain on Thursday. If they beat the La Liga side over two legs, they will take on either Tottenham or Bodo/Glimt in the final.
