Man United legend Rio Ferdinand was effusive in his praise of Matheus Cunha following his performance against Liverpool at the weekend.
The Brazilian was excellent at holding up the ball, especially in the latter stages of the game, and Ferdinand claims that the summer signing could become “almost unplayable” once he finds top form:
“Cunha, I thought, was magnificent. I think as the game went on as well, especially when we needed someone to kind of give us a bit of time and really respite, he was that guy.”
“I just think he’s a wonderful footballer. Once he gets into full flow, I think he’s going to be almost unplayable at times.”
Cunha’s start to life at Old Trafford
If you look at the 26-year-old’s stats since moving from Wolves to the Red Devils, they are nothing to write home about. He has not scored or provided an assist in 8 appearances.
Even so, Ferdinand is right to point towards the quality that was on show from Cunha on Sunday. If he can produce that sort of display, week in, week out, then the goals will surely come.
Man United need to build on their victory at Anfield
There is a danger of getting carried away with the result. Fans should be jubilant after beating Liverpool for the first time in nine years away from home.
However, as we saw after the win against Chelsea, with the defeat to Brentford, the Red Devils have shown they can drop a stinker following big results. Consistency is vital for head coach Ruben Amorim. Otherwise, the momentum from this massive victory will be lost.
The squad will have six days to prepare for the next fixture. They take on Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
