Rio Ferdinand Calls On Amorim To Start Man United Star Who Is “Like A New Signing”

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged head coach Ruben Amorim to give Mason Mount a long run in the starting eleven.

The England international’s first two seasons with the Red Devils have been marked with a succession of injuries but Ferdinand is hoping Mount can turn over a new leaf and show what he is truly capable of:

“He will be like a new signing. It’s no surprise that whenever he’s been fit, he’s played, especially at Chelsea and the managers have played him. When they won the Champions League, he was one of the most important players.”

“He has the quality, the work ethic, the legs and ability to be a really top player and I just hope he gets the time to play minutes and show himself.”

The Man United star has had terrible luck with injuries

Mount started just 5 Premier League games in his first season at Old Trafford following his £55m move from Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023. Hamstring and calf injuries limited his minutes on the pitch.

Things were not much better for him last campaign. The midfielder was sidelined for 23 matches, having missed 27 in his first year with United. However, he was available for the final two months of 2024/25, making nine consecutive league appearances.

It remains to be seen how Mount’s body will hold up heading into his third campaign in Manchester.

Where does Mount fit into the starting lineup?

Following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, it is hard to see the 26-year-old getting many opportunities in the front three.

In terms of a deeper role, Mount will face competition from captain Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo. If everyone’s fit and available, he may have to be satisfied with a place on the substitutes’ bench.
