Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes Manchester United star Leny Yoro can develop into one of the “world’s best” centre-backs.
Speaking to football betting site BetVictor, Leboeuf said that the 19-year-old has faced challenging circumstances following his switch to Old Trafford but he thinks he has the quality to become a top defender as long as United are able to revive their fortunes:
“Leny Yoro has experienced defenders alongside him in Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, who have both faced criticism but can teach him and show him the way to defend in the Premier League.”
“He’s unfortunate to come to Manchester United when they are in a real crisis, so it’s hard to expect a lot from young players and I think he is doing great considering the situation he has found himself in. Hopefully, he can settle down and develop into the world’s best as the atmosphere around the club improves.”
Yoro has faced multiple difficulties in his first season
It should not be forgotten that the teenager started the campaign injured, having been sidelined for several months after breaking his metatarsal in a friendly against Arsenal back in late July.
Combined with settling into a new country and a new league, Yoro has had to overcome several different challenges over the course of this season.
As Leboeuf mentions, the club’s poor form has certainly not helped the teenager settle into his new surroundings either, so you have to think that there is a lot more to come from him.
His performances for United
All the above factors do explain why his displays have been somewhat inconsistent. There have been games where he has really shone, while there have been others recently (especially against Newcastle) where he has struggled.
There are clearly good reasons why the Red Devils paid £58m to secure the defender’s signature last year and he will hopefully use his first campaign in England as a learning experience which he can learn and grow from.
