Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Man United board will sack Ruben Amorim “soon” unless there is an immediate upturn in results.
The 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the weekend leaves the Reds Devils in 14th place after six games, and speaking about Amorim’s future, Neville suggested the club could be forced into making a decision if things don’t improve:
“I’m really, really worried. I would never say a manager should be sacked publicly, but I have a feeling the hierarchy will want to see a clear turnaround soon.”
Man United have just one game before the next international break. They play Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.
Will Amorim be in charge for the Liverpool fixture?
The international break would be a good time to change managers if the board believe Amorim is not the man to take the club forward.
Having invested so much money in his project during the summer transfer window, though, there will be reluctance to pull the trigger too soon.
However, if Amorim’s team do suffer another poor result against Sunderland, the pressure on the manager will be huge. In that scenario, it would be a surprise if the 40-year-old is still in charge for the trip to Anfield later this month.
Who are the potential candidates if Man United sack their head coach?
Several names have been thrown around in recent days, including former England boss Gareth Southgate, Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner, and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.
However, it must be pointed out that no decision has been made on Amorim’s future yet, and while the club should have contingency plans in place if they choose to replace him, it’s premature to speculate on who the top contenders for the job will be.
