Man United managed to dodge a bullet last summer on a striker that Erik Ten Hag wanted the club to sign.
The Red Devils have struggled in scoring goals this season, with both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund failing to make much of an impact from the striker position.
The latter did manage to find the net in United’s last game, which was a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth. Hojlund scored a late equaliser, but it was still just his fourth Premier League goal of the season.
However, for all their problems up front, it seems that United managed to dodge a bullet last summer, as reports in the Netherlands have revealed a striker that Erik Ten Hag wanted to sign a year ago.
According to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, Ten Hag wanted to pay £34 million to sign Ajax striker Brian Brobbey, who has scored just four goals in 28 league matches for the Dutch side this season.
Brobbey was previously linked to West Ham United in January, but the Hammers weren’t convinced about him enough to make a bid. The 23 year-old previously played under Ten Hag at Ajax, which is one of the reasons why the ex-United boss wanted to sign him.
However, after what has been a dismal season for the Dutchman, he is now expected to command a transfer fee of just £8.5m, should any team want to buy him from Ajax this summer.
Which strikers could Man United sign?
Seeing as they did well in not signing Brobbey, United are likely to sign a striker this season, with the hope that they won’t flop at Old Trafford.
Wolves striker Matheus Cunha has been very strongly linked with a move to the North West after an impressive season for Vito Pereira’s side.
Cunha has scored 15 goals in 29 Premier League appearances, and with much better numbers, hopefully won’t have a ‘fall-off’ season, like Brobbey has had in the Eredivisie.
