Manchester United have made Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou their number one target if they do dispense with the services of Erik ten Hag.

Minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to have been very taken with the Australian’s personality and his ability to say “mate” in almost every sentence.

Postecoglou has only been at Spurs since joining from Celtic last summer, but the club’s supporters have taken him to their hearts after guiding the team to the lofty heights of 5th in the Premier League table.

It is believed Ratcliffe is convinced that, combined with Postecoglou’s charisma, the Aussie has the ability to transform United into an attack-minded team, who fall just short when it matters most.

When will a decision be made on ten Hag’s future?

INEOS are currently doing a root and branch assessment of the club’s infrastructure and footballing operations, which may take an absolute age to complete.

Going by how long it has taken them to negotiate a compensation package for Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth, it suggests a decision on ten Hag could be made any time in the next three to five years.

Are United looking at any alternatives?

If INEOS wait too long to secure the services of Postecoglou, they could find that he has already been sacked by Spurs and moved on to another job.

United may, therefore, have to consider other managers who Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford are mates with. That means the likes of England boss Gareth Southgate and former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter could come back into the frame. For now, though, it seems Postecoglou is the man favoured to take on the monumental challenge of saving United from another decade of mediocrity.
