Former Spurs and Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino is “being considered” by Man United as a possible replacement for Ruben Amorim, according to the Daily Star reporter David McDonnell.
The journalist has decent sources when it comes to the two Manchester clubs, and he says the current manager of the United States National Team is in the frame.
Pochettino was a candidate prior to Erik ten Hag’s appointment back in the summer of 2022, before INEOS’s arrival as minority stakeholders.
However, the Argentine was not among the candidates when ten Hag was sacked last year, with Amorim always regarded as the leading contender.
Man United have a 5-man shortlist
McDonnell claims that Pochettino is just one of the options under consideration if the Red Devils do decide to dispense with Amorim’s services.
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner, ex-England manager Gareth Southgate and Fulham’s Marco Silva will also be on the shortlist.
Amorim has 3 games to save his job
There are no plans to sack the manager yet, despite the disappointing defeat in the Manchester derby last weekend. The 40-year-old still commands the full backing of the board.
However, it appears that contingency plans are being put in place in case results don’t start to improve over the coming weeks.
It is believed Amorim’s performance will be reviewed at the next international break. With United not being in Europe, and having already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, they have just 3 matches between now and then.
The Red Devils take on Chelsea this weekend at home, before travelling to Brentford for the lunchtime kickoff a week on Saturday. At the start of next month, they will host newly-promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford.
