Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has admitted that it is an “honour” to be linked with the Man United job, but he has played down the prospect of replacing Ruben Amorim.

The 32-year-old is reportedly on the club’s shortlist if the Red Devils do sack Amorim, but when asked about the speculation, Hurzeler said:

“Of course, it is always an honour to be part of the rumours, but I really respect the coach, Ruben Amorim, there. I think it is not the right thing to talk about this.”

“Overall, I can say it is a privilege to work with Brighton. I am very happy to be the coach here and we have a lot of work in front of us.”

Hurzeler lacks the experience required

The German has only started his second season as a head coach in the Premier League, but his win ratio of 47.17% is very impressive after replacing Roberto De Zerbi in the summer of 2024. Even so, managing a club the size of Man United is a different kettle of fish.

Following the experience of Amorim, who had never managed in England prior to his appointment last November, it is believed that the Red Devils would favour someone who knows English football inside out.

If Hurzeler had been managing in this country for a longer period of time, and had won major trophies, he might have come under serious consideration.

The likes of Crystal Palace coach Oliver Glasner and former England boss Gareth Southgate are currently leading the odds to become the next permanent manager of the Red Devils.

Other names mentioned include former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
