Man United legend discusses the club’s most pressing concern this summer

Manchester United are set to spend heavily this summer and Jose Mourinho’s side have already been linked to an array of top-class players, including a number of attacking recruits who could bolster the Red Devils’ forward line.

Mourinho’s men scored just 54 goals in the Premier League last season, the lowest tally out of all of the top-six sides, and that number is less than champions Chelsea scored in their home games alone- which intensifies the need for a top-class striker to be signed.

The Red Devils relied far too much on Swedish ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season and the veteran’s long-term injury means he cannot be considered to be an option next season, with Mourinho needing to strengthen his ranks.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has also discussed the need for an improvement to the club’s threat in front of goal, although he stated any striker needs to be helped by the supporting members of United’s attacking cast.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Welshman said:

“United need goals. All the teams I played in there were goals from everywhere. Sometimes you’d rely on a centre-forward for a season, but more often than not you had midfielders, even defenders, wingers and obviously the forwards all contributing.”

“They lack goals. There was too much dependence on Ibrahimovic and obviously, they’ll miss him at least for the start of the season. They need to bring players in who’ll score goals, and one goalscorer who’s going to get 20-plus.”

Manchester United have seen their hopes of signing Atletico Madrid ace Antoine Griezmann dashed in the past week, with the Spanish side having their appeal towards a transfer ban rejected, which means that Mourinho needs to pursue alternative options.

Fortunately there is a wealth of top-class attacking names available this summer and the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Torino’s Andrea Belotti have been mentioned as potential recruits for Mourinho’s side this summer- and both of those players would prove to be expensive additions.

Money is not a problem for Manchester United this summer and they’re under pressure to make moves in the market following Manchester City’s early moves in the market, with the Citizens having already secured the services of Bernardo Silva from Monaco and on the verge of signing goalkeeper Ederson from Portuguese giants Benfica.

There’s also whispers of Liverpool making a huge push to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma and Arsenal have lodged a bid for Monaco ace Kylian Mbappe, which shows that United’s Premier League rivals are ready to spend.
