Lukaku will solve United’s ‘big problem’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has spoken out about Romelu Lukaku’s move to Manchester United, saying the Belgian will solve the Reds’ “big problem” of not scoring enough goals against smaller teams.

Last season United were famous for dropping points against lesser opposition. They drew 15 games in the Premier League – more than any other team in the division – and those draws often came at Old Trafford, ‘the theatre of draws’.

Having finished 6th, United certainly didn’t live up to their potential in Mourinho’s first season in charge. If not for winning the Europa League, perhaps the Portuguese’s job would’ve been under question. However, despite United’s defence being fairly solid last term, it was their lack of goals that doomed them to a poor league finish.

Having signed Romelu Lukaku, who scored 25 goals last season for Everton, United will hope to have signed a striker that can grab goals in any type of game – especially against weaker opposition, something that Zlatan struggled to do.

Carragher backs Lukaku to succeed in doing just that, saying the Red Devils will be a much better team than they were last year, tipping the Belgian to make the difference.

“I think Manchester United will be in there, they didn’t make the top four last year but I think they will with the additions that they’ve made,” said Carragher, speaking to Sky Sports Super 6.

“I think Lukaku will get goals for them, especially in the games where they dropped points, at home against weaker opposition.”

“I mean he’s been questioned about scoring in the big games, but that was a big problem for United last year, beating teams at home, teams they should beat, so I think he’ll help with that.”
