Lukaku Under ‘Immense’ Pressure

Lukaku Under ‘Immense’ Pressure

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has warned new signing Romelu Lukaku that he will be under immense pressure at the club and that he will need to develop a “thick skin” at the club in order to succeed.

The Belgian international joined United in a deal that could rise to the £90m mark this summer, replacing the departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney. Clearly, Lukaku has big boots to fill, and Giggs says that he expects the new No.9 to score goals. However, the Welshman has warned that Lukaku will be under huge pressure to perform more than ever before.

“He will be under scrutiny that he’s never had before at West Brom, or Chelsea, or Everton.” Giggs told Sky Sports News.

“The pressure will be on you. So he needs to develop a thick skin, he needs to listen to the coaches, because that’s all that counts really. And if he misses a chance, the next one that comes along he needs to put it away because, as a centre-forward at United, you’re under scrutiny all the time. I think he will score goals, but you need goals from all over the park.”

United were heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata, with Lukaku seemingly heading back to former club Chelsea, but United pulled off a deal for the Belgian under the Blues’ nose. Like many, Giggs believes that Lukaku’s Premier League experience puts him ahead of Morata and will make the transition of clubs easier.

“I’ve seen a bit of (Alvaro) Morata. I’ve seen more of Lukaku. The pluses with Lukaku are obviously that he’s played in the Premier League and Jose has worked with him before, and he’s got friends. He’s friends with Paul Pogba, and that makes the transition that bit easier.”

It will be interesting to see if Lukaku can beat Harry Kane to the golden boot with United this season and it will be interesting to see if the Belgian can win the top goal getter as he looks set for big things under Mourinho.

Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a fee with Inter Milan for winger Ivan Perisic. Rumours that the Croatian is a target of Mourinho’s has not always gone down well with many fans, but the 28-year-old is an old fashioned Manchester United winger who is a wonderful crosser of the ball. Giggs believes that the arrival of Perisic will have a big impact on the rest of the squad, calling on three players who will have to up their game.

“If he comes, then the likes of Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial have to step it up,” said Giggs.

“It can be a boost for all the players. It not only excites the fans but also the players, when a new player comes in.”
