Lindelof deal kicks-off crucial transfer period for Manchester United

Manchester United face a stern test this summer to bolster their side following a disappointing campaign in the Premier League, where the Red Devils finished sixth, and Jose Mourinho has his eyes on plenty of top-class recruits.

Mourinho has plenty of money to splash in the transfer market but things haven’t got off to the best of starts, with prime-target Antoine Griezmann ruling out an exit from Atletico Madrid- which handed the Red Devils a huge blow.

However, Manchester United have gathered themselves from that disappointment and now seem set to complete a wealth of significant deals imminently- which starts with the addition of long-term defensive target Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

The Swedish defender is set to join Mourinho’s regime imminently after the club confirmed yesterday that a deal with the Portuguese outfit has been reached, which makes Lindelof set to become Manchester United’s first recruit of 2017.

The 22-year-old will add versatility to Manchester United’s ranks as he’s capable of playing centrally in defence, which would see him partner Eric Bailly, whilst he’s also more than capable of challenging Antonio Valencia for a spot on the right-side of the back-line.

Crucially, Lindelof will add competitiveness to a Manchester United defence that has looked lacklustre in recent seasons and may pave the way for outgoing deals, as any of Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could find themselves surplus to requirements.

Manchester United won’t stop there though as they’re also widely reported to be closing in on a sensational deal to land Spanish striker Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, in a transfer that is reportedly set to be worth around £60m.

Morata will aim to fill the void left by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure, which was confirmed by the Red Devils on Friday due to the Swedish forward’s long-term injury issue, and could find himself with a new strike-partner as the Red Devils continue to chase Torino’s Andrea Belotti.

Those three additions would be a massive boost to Manchester United and securing them before the Red Devils kick-off a busy pre-season campaign in mid-July would be crucial, especially as Mourinho’s side have to contend with an astonishing seven games before the Premier League returns.

The wealth of pre-season fixtures will certainly put Manchester United to the test before the season even begins as huge games against the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid await.
