Laurie Whitwell Reveals Ronaldo’s Agent Has Offered Manager To United With ‘Attainable Release Clause’

Jorge Mendes has offered Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui to Manchester United as a potential managerial candidate, according to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell.

Mendes, who is Lopetegui and Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent, suggested the former Spain manager a couple of weeks ago, before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

It is not known whether Lopetegui is still in the frame but Whitwell claims that the 55-year-old does have an “attainable release clause” that would allow him to leave Sevilla now.

Whether the Spaniard would be a good choice, is another matter. He did win the Europa League in 2020, beating United on the way to the final, but he failed at his last big job with Real Madrid.

After the La Liga giants worked so hard to make him manager, he lasted just 14 matches at the Bernabeu before being given his marching orders. The role at United would arguably be even more difficult so we shall see if he is considered by the Red Devils’ hierarchy.
